Following the success of our previous post about the positives and advantages of starting a handyman service business in your town, we decided to add some more information about the topic.

With so many businesses out there starting up in the construction industry, it’s easy to be left behind with little to know work if you try to enter in new.

Contractor businesses such as roofers, painters, drywall, framers, and remodelers usually have the entire market to themselves. A lot of these people in these industries have been around for 20+ years and pretty much get all of their work from word of mouth. It takes a tremendous amount of time to get that established.

It’s all predicated on trust. Let’s say that you were in the market for a new roof. It is a massive project to undertake and you are going to seek out someone you trust. Since you don’t know a roofer personally, you are going to look for people you know and trust that had a great experience with installing a new roof. Whoever they say or recommend, you’re going to go with them right?

This is why it’s so difficult for a new roofer, or any other contractor industry to get started. Heck, even a business like those junk removal service providers has a difficult time starting things out. Jobs will be extremely hard to come by and they will have to spend a hefty portion of whatever money they earn on additional advertising. Things like Yelp, Homeadvisor, Google Ads, old-school mailers can cost a fortune. We heard contractors pay into the thousands to get a good amount of work back.

If you are a licensed contractor you, more than likely busted your behind to get that license and spent a lot of money on it. Why not start things out as a handyman. It may not seem at that lucrative at first, but give it time. The work will begin to pay off.

Every single day, hundreds of people need something fixed or installed in their homes. There are also property management companies that constantly seek handymen out.

Another remarkable thing to take into account is the ease of marketing your handyman service business. These days, placing an ad on Craigslist, for example, cost a measly $5. This is a recent change that took place it used to be free but charging people has really filtered out the spammers and scuzzy businesses.

You can also hand out business cards over to property management companies. The amount of work these companies need will blow your mind. Think about. Property managers are in the business of keeping the rentals homes off of the minds off of their owners at all times. They are hired to take care of everything and anything that happens to the homes they manage. If something breaks (which will inevitably) who are they gonna call? You of course!

Do a terrific job at everything you do and the good word will spread. Install a toilet flawlessly. Install that new ceiling fan as they expert that you are. Caulk windows, bathtubs and sinks with the utmost care. Repair a screen door better than the screen repair guy can do it and watch as the work begins to pour in.

Another thing that will take place is that you will begin to see what your town is in real need for. You might be surprised to see that the town is older and roofs are in constant disarray and need of re-roofing. You may see that people are a little more affluent than you thought and many are looking for room additions or remodels.

Becoming a handyman has its many advantages besides the initial money you will make. It will open up the opportunity to something you may have never thought of before.

Special thanks to our friends over at Santa Maria Handyman Services for letting us use some of their images and their input on the industry.

Starting A Handyman Business – A Great Business To Get Into

With so many construction companies started up business these days, the competition can get fierce. It doesn’t matter if it’s starting up a new roofing business, a new concrete company, a new kitchen remodeler. Your competition can be overwhelming to overcome and get some traction going in your city or town.

The people in your community when they are on the search for a new kitchen remodel contractor, a new roofer, or a contractor to expand their driveway, most of the time they are going to be looking from the people that they know and get recommendations from. Working on a big project or Home Improvement project on a property is a very expensive purchase for a lot of homeowners.

The last thing that they want to do is to just open up the phone book or search for someone online that they know nothing about to work on their big project. They want to feel safe about the person or persons that they’re going to hire.

You being new in the industry in your town more than likely have very little credibility and not very much contact with your community. It will be a lot more difficult to go pick up a roofing job when there are 15 other roofers in the area, many with a lot of recommendations.

But, if you were a handy individual and are an expert in the generality of tasks to do with construction, then starting out a handyman business could be your best bet and getting some traction going in your town.

Believe it or not, the number of searches online for handyman services in a town greatly outnumber the searches for say a more practical contractor. For example, if you look up a roofer in Fresno California, the number of searches that come back or around 100 to 150 searches per month.

However, if you type in handyman in Fresno California the searches are over 500 a month. Insane!

Go ahead and look up a concrete contractor in Fresno. The results? The numbers are about a hundred a month. V the amount of handyman services.

It is true that a handyman job that you may get a call for won’t equal the amount of money you earn for say, pouring a sidewalk in someone’s backyard.

The advantage that you would have when starting a handyman service is that you are going to be getting calls like crazy for all types of work. You’re going to get calls for installing toilets, installing sinks, fixing and repairing doors and doorknobs, and maybe even changing a couple light bulbs. The main thing you have to look at is the amount of impact you are going to make in your community.

A lot of those small jobs can make a small business starting out quite a bit of money. You can have some of your workers take care of all that work. Eventually, as time goes by, huge jobs in huge opportunities will start to trickle down your way.

Before you know it, you were going to get calls for huge projects like entire kitchen remodels. Soon, Susan, who was absolutely ecstatic at the great work you did for installing a new toilet in her home, is going to tell Debbie at work about the great work that you did. Susan knows that Debbie it’s looking to get a new deck installed. Since you did such a great job she, of course, is going to recommend her to you.

Bobby, who you helped installed new kitchen faucets in his kitchen is going to tell Fred who works for the city about your friendly demeanor and professionalism because he knows that Fred is looking to remodel his bathroom.

These are the types of jobs that lead to bigger and bigger projects for your small company. This is the route that you should take if you’re going to start a construction business. Let everyone knock each other out spending money on ads and underbidding jobs just to get ahead.

You will have a much bigger advantage. You will have the trust and love of your community. And customers will pay generously for that.

This post was brought to you by your handyman in Fresno California. They are currently experiencing this level of success with their business by following this exact model.
